“ I have found Brighter Futures perform a vital function in bridging the gap between a childrens home and independence.

The staff display a sensitivity and commitment to the complex needs of young people that goes a long way to helping them succeed in the transition to adulthood.

There are not many places I am aware of that could have enabled the young person I placed there make the same level of progress as Brighter Futures has.

“ Brighter Futures aims to do exactly what the name suggests and that is to give our son a brighter future.

He is learning how to make the right choices and how the choices he makes will shape his future.

Staff members are fantastic and finally we have found a place where his issues are fully understood. We can't thank the staff enough for what they have done and continue to do for our son.

My experience of the Brighter Futures scheme
By Akyla Martin

Hello,
Just thought I would tell you about Brighter Futures in a young persons view (that’s me Lol!)

How I came to be at Brighter Futures:
I was referred by my social worker from Rochdale young persons support team (YPST) as my lodging placement was breaking down.

An informal interview was given to me a week or so later. I arrived at the unit on Park Road and was greeted by the on site manager, first words that came from the manager was, “kettles on come in don’t be shy”. I felt really welcome. We chatted about what support I would need and what things I could do myself.

What I thought of the project:
I was shown which of the rooms would be mine and the shared kitchen and lounge.

The room that was going to be mine was lush it had cream coloured walls and beige cream curtains. A bathroom to myself was the best part of the room. Oh also the walk in wardrobe was cool and it was perfect for me.

I knew I would like it there.

My first night!!!
I moved in on the Wednesday of the week after my interview. I was really scared and nervous but I calmed down and relaxed. I quickly unpacked and tidied away my things and also put up my posters and photos.

I settled in quickly and within a few days got to know people better. It was great.

How I progressed:
I lived there for a while and got more confident in myself. I was self harming before I moved in and as time moved on it got less and less. The staff helped me turn my life around. I am so grateful for the time I had a Brighter Futures.

Where am I now?
Well at the minute I am living in the follow on project owned by Amanda Knowles and Phil McVay. The project is called Future Horizons. If you’re ready to move but not sure you can cope with being on your own it may be the right place for you.

The owners (Amanda and Phil) have purchased houses all over for young people to share.

My home is fab, its a two bed, mid terrace in Darwen.

You still have a support worker to help you, be it with cleaning, budgeting etc. My support worker is Sally Knowles, Amanda’s daughter and she is also a support worker at Park Road.

Hope that this will make you see its not all bad

Thanks
Akyla
